Lightning Streak (Zig Zag) Quilt
Unidentified Quilt Maker
Circa 1890
68 x 82 inches
Origin Unknown; Ohio
What a quilt! A virtual sample book of late 19th century red and white prints, including some "conversation prints," this is as graphically exciting as an early Navajo blanket.
Condition is amazing. The quilt is CRISP! Appears unused. Never washed, it has a couple of small stains (see last photo.) Hung vertically, it is narrow enough to fit well on a smaller wall, but its impact is equally great hung either way.
The various reds are set against a lightly printed white and back print, which also serves as the border, and the back. S/he used a second black and white print in her separately applied binding.
This one is hand quilted in the Fans or Clamshell design with stitches that are very fine and even. See close up photos to see the quilting.
