House Quilt

Unidentified Quilt Maker
Circa 1950
72 x 88 inches
Origin Unknown; Found in Missouri

This one is just back from a Show of House Quilts which  organized for the Iowa Quilt Museum in Winterset, IOWA.  I have two very favorite things about this quilt.

First ~ I love how the quilt maker added a white "pleated" strip to separate each house from its roof.  Because in each House the fabric of the house and the fabric of the roof is the same print ~  it really needs that stark solid white to make it look right.

I am always comforted by makers who are casual in their sewing.  These houses only sort of "line up," and stand straight up.  And, if you look at the House second from left in the second row from bottom, its orientation is reversed from all the other Houses.  AND ~ the windows are sinking into the ground there.  Makes you wonder .. and smile ...

In very good condition, with excellent hand quilting, and with a flowered bedsheet for the back and binding. This is a charming, memorable piece of American Folk Art.
