Rocky Road Quilt
Unknown Quilt Maker
Circa 1900
70 x 80 inches
Origin Unknown
Red and Green have long been a combination associated with Winter Holidays celebrated in both pagan and Christian communities. And for a variety of reasons ... red + green has long been a favorite color combination for makers of quilts.
This strikingly graphic Rocky Road quilt would add "a festive touch" to any room, in this Holiday season. (That's me, channeling my inner Martha Stewart.)
Quilt was made sometime around the turn of the 20th century. Its origin? Displays some characteristics we tend to associate with quilts made in the American South. My best guess as its origin is Kentucky ... or Tennessee. Hand quilted.
The Rocky Road quilt design is a precursor to one subsequently called "New York Beauty." This example is a size that would be good for hanging -- and it already has the hand sewn sleeve attached.
