1884 Crazy Quilt, Eastern Star

It's quite unusual to find a late Victorian Crazy Quilt in original condition, with all the fabrics intact, and the colors vivid! This one was carefully kept by my friend Cathy's family, since the time it was made for her Great Grandmother in 1883 and 1884.
Family story tells that this was made for Cathy's Great Grandmother as she was about to leave Michigan for California in late 19th century. Several friends contributed, with apparent great fondness. We see many names among the broad array of all appliqued and embroidered images; fans, an artist palette, an American Flag and a Christian cross.
A five-pointed Star appears several times -- likely the symbol of the Eastern Star, of which her Great Grandmother was a member. The Star in a corner is appliquéd, stuffed, embroidered, and inscribed with initials and an exact date: Feb. 21st, 1883.
A tidy little piece, measuring 54 x 57 inches. Bordered and finished a the edges, it has no batting or a back. (See last photos.) As is typical of these quilts, it was made on foundation, creating an interesting back.
