"Rising Sun" Quilt
Unknown Quilt Maker
Circa 1935, from the studio of Hubert ver Merhen and wife
76 x 76 inches
Origin Unknown; Found in Texas
Think of the skill of the person who PIECED this amazing variation/complication of Mariner's Compass or Chips and Whetstones. And once you take that in, check out the superb hand quilting that densely covers the entire surface of this Beauty.
Hubert Ver Mehlen and "his wife" (who never seems to be named) designed dozens of complex medallion pieced and embroidered designs in Des Moines IA in the decades leading up to 1950. They named this one "Rising Sun," and released the pattern in 1932. (For more on the Ver Mehlens, scroll down to the bottom of this description.)
Thin and lightweight, this treasure is in exceptionally Fine Condition. The scalloped edge (which may been unique to this particular quilt maker) is separately bound in white cotton. A sleeve has been added to the back for ease of hanging.
We don't see many quilts of this design; making it right required an enormously skilled maker. And to see one in such superb condition is even more rare.
MORE on Ver Mehlens. From the pages of the Quilter's Hall of Fame: "Cuesta Benberry, a leading quilt historian in the twentieth century, described Hubert Ver Mehren and his Home Art Studios business in Des Moines, Iowa, as the source of the most original pieced patterns before 1950. His catalogues introduced products from giant medallion quilts to elegant floral embroidery designs. He brought in significant income from the sale of thousands of his exceptionally fine catalogs that have survived to today. The colorful layout of the contents, the multitude of traditional blocks and the modern/original designed medallion quilts attracted the broadest audience possible."
