Spirit of St. Louis Quilt

Unidentified Quilt Maker
Circa 1940
65 x 82 inches
Origin Unknown

Charles Lindbergh was the first person to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean. In May of 1927, he completed a solo flight from New York to Paris, in 33 hours.  Americans were giddy with excitement about "Lindy's" achievement ...  (See last photos.)

As with some other historic events, quilt makers were inspired to commemorate the flight, and soon enough ~ patterns for the single engine plane, named "Spirit of St. Louis" appeared in newspapers all over the the country. While the design details (and names) of these patterns varied, they all celebrated the historic flight, its graphic plane, and its handsome pilot. (See last photos.)

This example, striking in its bold solid colors,  is in Excellent Condition.  It's thin and lightweight and very well made.  The well executed hand quilting is impressive.  Check out the small blue square in the sashing -- they are quilted propellors!

A textile celebrating a pivotal time in American history, a time when the world became jut a little bit smaller...
