Original Design Applique Quilt
Unidentified Quilt Maker
Circa 1930
76 x 88 inches
Origin Unknown
It has been fun trying to figure out if this especially lovely design was made using a published pattern. So far, none of us who've been sleuthing it has seen another just like it.
It has elements however, of a popular Mountain Mist design, pattern #28, called "Martha's Vineyard," first published in 1931. See my last photo for an example of a quilt that aligns exactly to the MM instructions.
Speculated conclusion is that a quilt maker used the published elements to make her own original design. S/he rearranged the MM elements into columns, and softened the first design by using a printed lilac print rather than a true purple.
Thin and lightweight, with a lovely, delicate feel. Recently professionally washed, this beauty is in Excellent Condition. Her hand quilting is dense and skillfully executed, and she finished the quilt with a separate binding in solid green cotton.
