Improvisational  Quilt

Unknown Quilt Maker
Circa 1950
60 x 74 inches
Origin Unknown; Found in Louisiana

This quilt came to me with a "suggestion" that it was made by an African American maker.  But without solid documentation, we cannot know a quilt's origin. An "improvisational' style is sometimes assumed to reflect an African American aesthetic, but we know that improv is only one style that shows up in African American-made quilts.  And we have plenty of documented Euro-American quilts made in an improv style.

So please judge this one by its aesthetic merits rather than anything about its origin, which is unknown at this point.

While, the quilt is generally in Very Good Condition, please see the photos to see that there are at least three pieces (brown) that have small splits, and at least one separated seam.  I don't see more condition issues.

Made of all cottons, and primarily printed fabrics, this quilt has an appealing rhythm.  The quilt maker(s?) did a pleasing mix of dark and light colors as well as a mix of sizes of the pieces. Hand quilted in large stitches.
