Improvisational Log Cabin Quilt
Unknown Quilt Maker
Circa 1960
72 x 78 inches
Origin Unknown; Found in Alabama
What an inventive way this quilt maker constructed each block in this mid-twentienth century Log Cabin. To me it looks as if each of the nine standard Log Cabin block floats above a kind of "Hit and Miss" background. The design both jumps around and is grounded, all at once.
S/he did another interesting thing with the quilting. Using dark thread she machine quilted to make diagonal lines that subtly emphasizes the diagonals created by the patchwork.
All cottons, and in Excellent Condition.
As for the quilt's origin, I wish we knew. I was lucky enough to buy several improvisational quilts, all found in Alabama. But sadly, without any further history or provenance. we can't could know who made these, or if the makers were related.
