String Bars Quilt
Unknown Quilt Maker
Circa 1960
62 x 80 inches
Origin Unknown; Found in Alabama
I was recently lucky enough to buy several improvisational quilts, all found in Alabama, but without any further history or provenance. How I wish we could know who made these, and if the makers were related!
This quilt intrigued and surprised me with its dual/seemingly split palette. My two silly explanations are these: 1) The quilt was made by a Mom for a shared bed, and the two kids (yes, it's small) have very different personalities. 2) The maker had a "split personality," as we used to call it -- and brought both of them to the making of this quilt.
We don't really need a reason, do we? I like it when I see something that at first strikes me as "wrong." I get reminded that this was one quilt maker's choice, and just as right as anything else. I love that choices in quilt making are virtually unlimited.
All cottons, including a wonderful heart print! Excellent Condition. Hand Quilted.
