Log Cabin, Barn Raising Quilt Top

Unknown Quilt Maker
Circa 1900
64 x 80 inches
Origin Unknown; Found in Pennsylvania

Classic! A Log Cabin quilt organized in the "Barn Raising" configuration, with radiating light and dark Diamonds, emanating from the center.  By placing the light and dark halves of each block just so, different overall effects are achieved.

Log Cabin quilts often have red at the center of each block.  The quit maker here chose wool for her red centers.  Only those squares are wool; the rest of the pieces are cotton.  Wool absorbs dye in an especially saturated way -- and can give off a very rich look.

Hand stitched onto a "foundation," this is an "almost-finished" top.  Excellent, Sturdy Condition. It could be backed, and quilted, or not.  It could stand on its own, as is -- or with an added binding.  It could be enlarged by adding borders -- so many choices!

The printed cotton fabrics provide a great way to see what kind of materials were widely available to everyday, mainstream American women at the turn of the 20th century -- for their many (essential) sewing projects.
