In the last decades of the 19th century, and into the early days of the 20th, tobacco companies started including "premiums" in the packages of cigarettes they were selling. Said to have been used as a marketing tool, the companies wanted to entice women to cigarettes, or, at the least, include something that would be of value to women.

A wide variety of images were printed (often in polychrome) onto the silk, silk "blends," satins, or felt surfaces, scaled to a size that would fit nicely into the packages. Collecting and sewing these singles together, or including them in Crazy Quilts, became a trend during this late Victorian era. Common images were famous actresses and athletes, animals, Presidents of the U.S., birds, fruits, and more.

This piece has primarily two types of images: Flags of the world, American university and college athletes. But near the center, in the second row from top, are two very different subjects -- a print of an indigenous chief, and a scantily clad young woman at the beach. These kinds of images were often printed in series.

Measuring 26 x 58 inches, this piece is banner-like; perhaps it was utilized as a table runner or a piano scarf in someone's Victorian parlor. In Excellent Condition.
