I was flummoxed by it -- I'd never seen anything like it.  Why did the quilter stitch those white \"waves\" made with haphazard looking stitches?\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI'm lucky enough to have very smart and experienced quilt friends, and so I went to my pal, Joe Cunningham (AKA \"Joe the Quilter\") who knows as much about hand quilting designs and techniques as anyone.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eJoe tells me that each arc of the Fan or Clamshell quilting ENDS with numerous back stitches. The arcs are single lines of quilting -- and when the quilter came to the end of her arc, she made tons of back stitches -- which when seen -- come out looking like waves!  Oh!
