John Fisk's Masonic Quilt

Unidentified Quilt Maker
Circa 1930
64 x 72 inches
Found in Maryland
Excellent Condition

Could somebody named John Fisk have made this quilt?

Although a small number of men are known to have made quilts in the "old days," the more likely maker of this unique piece is John Fisk's wife, another family member, or perhaps women associated with Mr. Fisk as a member of the Masons.

S/he included the most recognized Masonic symbol of the Square and Compass, with the letter "G" (for God).  The interpretation of them becomes almost abstract, and it all comes together in a unique folk art textile.

The quilt was well planned, organized around a medallion center, and with the symbols organized into rows. The "casual" placement of the letters of Fisk's name mirrors the informality of the overall graphics.

A rare, rather raucous quilt in Excellent Condition; a unique American textile.
