Lone Star Quilt
Unknown Quilt Maker
Circa 1890
77 x 77 inches
Origin: Probably Pennsylvania
A superb example of turn-of-the-20th-century Pennsylvania German art. The Lone Star pattern is a favorite design among PA Mennonites, and this one is as dazzling as they get.
This quilt maker's use of color placement, choice of proportions, and her addition of orbiting satellite Stars, and Sawtooth borders give us a shimmering, glistening universe.
Her choice of background fabric is brilliant. The color of the ground fabric is commonly known as "Lancaster Blue." The scale of the print is absolutely perfect for the overall sparkling effect. I like how s/he carried the red and yellow into the sawtooth border, and finishing with a separately applied red cotton binding
Hand quilted and in Excellent Condition with a few spots near the center, one in the yellow center ring (see photos). The quilt is a good size for hanging; it is also thin and lightweight.
