Variations on a Theme
With the seams "outlined" in simple light embroidery, this almost has the look of a child's drawing of a Log Cabin quilt, the lines filled in with colored pencils.
The composition here is strong, even architectural. At the same time the quilt's
soft symmetry and delicate embroidered lines make it "friendly," and
easy to live with. I can vouch for this.
This quietly improvisational quilt has been in my collection ~ and intermittently
on my walls ~ for a couple of decades. It speaks to me, and calms me.
It's interesting to see how the quilt maker balanced the overall composition: the upper right and lower left blocks mirror each other just as the upper left and lower right ones do. The remaining four navy blocks all seem related.
Light weight wools, with a printed cotton back. Tied.
