Improvisational Log Cabin/Hit and Miss Quilt
Unknown Quilt Maker
Circa 1940
66 x 72 inches
Origin Unknown; Found in Alabama
I was recently lucky enough to buy several improvisational quilts, all found in one place in Alabama. Sadly, they came without any additional history or provenance. How I wish we could know who made them, and if the makers were related!
I see this as one wonderful overall design, composed of tons of smaller compositions, each made by someone with a very good eye for design (each one is cool) -- and the full knowing that s/he could sew them, and place them, as s/he pleased.
A pretty good size for hanging, if that is what you decide to do. I would! All cottons, and in Very Good Condition. Hand quilted in the Fans or Clamshell design we see a lot on these scrappy quilt, perhaps especially those made in the South.
