Honeycomb Quilt

Unidentified Quilt Maker
Circa 1890
74 x 84 inches
Origin Unknown; Found in Pennsylvania

This wonder is made from thousands of hexagons, each of them cotton and most of them made of a fabric known as "cretonne."

Cretonne is a heavy cotton, unglazed and printed -- usually floral.  It was widely used at the turn of the 20th century in upholstery and curtains.  We also frequently see it on the backs of quilts of that era.

Here it seems someone had access to lots of the sturdy fabric and made a Honeycomb or Mosaic quilt of pieces of it.  Even the back and borders are made from cretonne yardage. The quilt is in perfect condition and ready to go.
