Folk Art Farm Scene
Inscribed on reverse: "ANNA BOWMAN"
90 x 86 inches
Found in New York State
One of the great Folk Art quilts: A wholly original design with the name "ANNA BOWMAN" hand embroidered in block letters on the reverse.
Whether Anna Bowman made the quilt is as yet unknown; perhaps she was the recipient of the quilt as a gift, or was a subsequent owner of it.
I strongly suspect New York State is the origin. The woman who collected the quilt, and from whose son I purchased it, was originally from the Ithaca area, and did most of her quilt collecting there. Other 19th century New York quilts have similarly constructed houses.
Beautifully hand quilted in elegant sprays of leaves and flowers.
Excellent Condition. Strong, sturdy and intact. The red binding had just the beginnings of wear, and in order to preserve the original, I had a professional conservator reinforce the binding with red netting. It is barely noticeable, but worth mentioning.
