Diamond Sunburst, Free-Floating Applique Quilt
Unidentified Quilt Maker
Circa 1960
44 x 60 inches
Origin Unknown; Found in Iowa
An example of a rarely seen type of quilt making where shapes are appliquéd onto a ground without touching one another. I call it "free form" or "free floating" applique. We don't see it much at all in American quilts, but there is a precedent for the style in mid-19th century English quilts.
Sometime near the middle of the 20th century, a maker whose many diamonds are inexpertly appliquéd, organized them in circles of colors, starting with rays of yellows, that give the look of a sunny Sunburst.
At 44 x 60 inches, this rare example of its construction and design type is a good choice for a wall hanging.
