A terrific example of an early English quilt, with some very English characteristics.
The Central Medallion format is an English textile tradition, which incidentally was one Americans inherited. (We Americans eventually turned to the repeated block format as our preference and contribution!)
The center design is constructed with a technique called "Broderie Perse," another term for "cut chintz applique." Women cut floral and other representational images from very expensive printed chintz -- for some, an economic "hack." Makers could then arrange the cut out pieces into lovely appliquéd compositions.
This beauty is in Excellent Condition. Thin and lightweight and with a separately applied binding. The hand quilting here is extraordinary -- see the close up photo. Someone very skilled and experienced did the teeny tiny, even stitches.
