 ~~ Crisp and Intact ~

Made at the end of the 19th century by an industrious maker, this handsome quilt contains more than 5,000 pieces.

The small triangles are representative of a wide range of printed cottons, many of them based on madder dyes, which were available to mainstream women during the second half of the 19th century.  Look closely; you'll see a
black and white 1876 Centennial printed cotton.

The quilt maker arranged each small square using one dark triangle and one lighter, resulting in a dark and light design known as "Birds in the Air."

Hand quilted, simply, with diagonal straight lines across the quilt. The Star
of this show are the varied and beautiful printed fabrics.

The back is also cotton: a printed fabric. And even the separately applied binding is a gorgeous 19th century madder print.
