Amish Chinese Coins
Unidentified Quilt Maker
50 x 74 inches
Found in Illinois
An Amish quilt found in Illinois, and possibly made in Arthur, Illinois ~ only one of two Amish communities in that state at the beginning of the 20th century.
Most Midwest Amish quilts were made in cottons, but this one, like most of the quilts made in Arthur, IL, is made in fine dress-weight wools.
The size (50 x 74 inches) is a good size for hanging. The quilt was likely made either as a "buggy blanket" to guard against the cold, or perhaps it was made for a trundle or "handyman's" bed.
Hand quilted in fine, even stitches. As is typical of early Amish quilts, this one was quilted using a non-contrasting color thread for the decorative stitched designs.
