"Spirit of St. Louis" Airplane Quilt
Unknown Quilt Maker
Circa 1940
60 x 60 inches
Origin Unknown; Found in Illinois
Charles Lindbergh was the first person to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean. In May of 1927, he completed a solo flight from New York to Paris, in 33 hours. Americans were giddy with excitement about "Lindy's" achievement ...
As with some other historic events, quilt makers were inspired to commemorate the flight, and soon enough ~ patterns for the single engine plane, named "Spirit of St. Louis" appeared in newspapers all over the the country.
This quilt, made from one of those patterns, followed the suggestion to hand quilt EAGLES in the alternate blocks. The quilt maker chose to outline the Eagle in a gold thread. See photos.
Small at 60 x 60 inches, this would make a great wall hanging that does not take up too much space. Perfect for a child's room or the wall of a Grown Kid's office! Hand quilted and in Excellent Condition, with the occasional small spot.
