Mariner's Compass Quilt
Unknown Quilt Maker
Circa 1850 (likely quilted later)
74 x 88 inches
Origin Unknown; Found in Texas
A spectacular, early example of the Mariner's Compass design, known to be very difficult to draft and execute. This quilt maker was a pro! The pieced Compasses float on w awhile friend and are surrounded by a hand appliqued vining border.
The early fabrics retain their original vibrance almost 200 years later; seeing the "real thing" is a joy to us printed fabric lovers.
The top dates to circa 1850. And although I do not know for sure, I believe the quilt was finished later. The lovely hand quilting, executed in small, even stitches and in elaborate designs, looks 20th century to me. As does the binding.
Excellent Condition: the cottons are strong and sturdy, and there is no fading or were of any kind. This beauty appears to have been treasured and so had little or no use.
