String Star Quilt
Unknown Quilt Maker
Circa 1920
74 x 86 inches
Origin Unknown; Found in Nebraska
Hand quilted in a Fan or Clamshell technique considered utilitarian and practical, this String Star is filled with cotton prints widely available to everyday women in the early 20th century. Mail order catalogues like Montgomery Ward and Sears went to vast numbers of households by then. And, of course if you lived close to a town, you could easily find this kind of fabric in the General Store.
This quilt was found in Omaha, Nebraska in a House Sale, and was likely made there. Excellent, sturdy condition, with very slight fading at the corners, and three tiny darkened spots (see last photo). The back is a cozy striped cotton flannel, adding a comfortable and inviting vibe.
