Rail Fence Quilt

Hand Quilted, and possibly made by Hystercine Rankin
Circa 1990
88 x 88 inches
Mississippi

Made in the latter part of the 20th century, this "Rail Fence" quilt is entirely cottons.  It's unclear who pieced the quilt, but we do know the well-known woman who hand quilted the quilt. She put her label on the back!

Hystercine Rankin (see last photos) was an award-winning quilt maker, well known in the quilt community. A native of Mississippi, she gained great recognition in the last part of the 20th century, even receiving the National Heritage Fellowship Award in 1997.  (See last photo to see it awarded by then-First Lady, Hilary Clinton.)

The label indicates Rankin "hand quilted" the Rail Fence design,  and she may have also pieced the quilt. In any case, she finished this well-made, visually appealing quilt.

Excellent Condition.
