Princess Feather Quilt

Makers said to have been "Ruth" and "Edythe"
Circa 1910
82 x 82 inches
Oregon

A bit of a mystery quilt.  I bought this from a woman who was told it was made by her Great Aunts, Ruth and Edythe, in the early days of the 20th century.  The sisters, who remained single, lived in Oregon.

I have questions:  1) The printed fabrics look older than 1910 to me.  2) Why the hearts in the middle of each appliquéd block?  Very unusual way to construct that design.  3) The center heart has letters (names) quilted in.  One name looks like "Roxie," ... and the other appears to perhaps have been picked out?

Mysteries aside, this is a finely made quilt, with strong, swirling designs, and triple borders.  The maker(s) did excellent hand appliqué, along with superb hand quilting, executed in fine even stitches forming Double Feather Wreaths in all of the white areas.

Excellent, sturdy condition with one area of light discoloration.  A fine example of the endless variation and ingenuity in American women's needlework.
