What happened here??
A minor tragedy ... and I am personally hoping the unfortunate color loss did not happen within the quilt maker's lifetime. S/he must have used two dye lots of red cotton fabric, one of which did not hold its color. At all.
After all the hours of expert piecing and hand quilting, and what must have originally been a perfectly intact overall design, poof! Dye failure. Ooooph!
Check the photos to see that all the pieces are there -- but much of the red dye has disappeared. It appears that the pieced border "fan" elements were once green and red, but now ... At least they are perfectly consistent.
Still a very interesting piece, in excellent condition save for the obvious. A true conversation piece, and/or teaching tool.
Meticulously pieced ~ All those curved seams! Strong and sturdy, thin and lightweight, with very fine hand quilting.
