Post of Flowers Applique Quilt
Unidentified Quilt Maker
Circa 1860
84 x 87 inches
Origin Unknown
Condition is not perfect ... but Hey! This is one great quilt! The strength, exuberance, and originality of the design outweigh the relatively minor condition issues. A few occasional light stains and spots do not hold a candle to the robust, charming design.
This folk art beauty is thin and lightweight, with an exceptionally dense center field of applied (and reverse appliqued) red and green flowers in pots. It looks like the maker carefully measured the vining border to make a proper symmetrical turn around each corner.
Even though the quilt maker left little white space, s/he executed dense, fine hand quilting all over the surface, creating a subtle embossed texture as a ground for the graphic appeal of the whole.
