Carolina Lily
Unidentified Quilt Maker
Circa 1900
72 x 80 inches
Found in Maryland
The turn-of-the-century quilt maker distinguished her "Carolina Lily" design by having her spray of lilies come out of a heart-shaped pot, on stems with a bud and leaves, and by adding those wonderful blue quatrefoils.
The quilt is in very good condition. The colors have mellowed over the years., and the beige (or dun) color was likely once a solid green.
The hand quilting in small, even stitches, in a very interesting, unusual way. The quilter did chevrons in four quadrants, with their points leading to the middle of each block.
An example of a quilt maker taking a traditional design, and adding quirky features that make the quilt memorable, and her very own.
