Harriet Powers Bible Quilt, Smithsonian Reproduction
Unknown Quilt Maker
Circa 1992
62 x 80 inches
Origin Unknown; Found in Illinois
The Smithsonian Institution owns the original of this unique quilt, made in 1886 by Harriet Powers of Athens, Georgia. Each of the blocks tells a Bible story, as envisioned by Mrs. Powers, a masterful artist. (See a colorized photo of her, below.)
In the early 1990's the Smithsonian licensed reproductions of the quilt to be made overseas. Their decision led to a major protest by American quilt makers, which resulted in a congressional hearing ~ and a change in the Smithsonian's policy. (For more on this story see: https://www.quiltfolk.com/journal/harriet-powers-quilt-made-in-china/ )
This example is one of the reproductions of the original, and is in Excellent Condition. The hand applique is beautifully done, as is the hand quilting. A piece of history in exceptionally good condition.
