Amish Cake Plate Quilt
Unidentified Amish Quilt Maker
Circa 1960- 1970
72 x 72 inches
Probably Lancaster County, Pennsylvania
This design, "Cake Plate" is one that was made by the women in Lancaster County, PA starting as early as about 1930. We see those earlier ones made out of the dress weight wools available at that time.
This example, however, was made late in the classic period of Amish quilts made in Lancaster County ~ circa 1960s or 1970s, and is made of synthetic fabrics. These fabrics hold their color in a very saturated way and have a bright glow to them.
The hand quilting here, executed in small fine stitches in dark colored thread, is excellent, a signature of Amish made quilts. I have lightened the last photo to better show it. The quilt is full of stylized flowers and variants on the feathered wreath the Amish favored.
