A very beautiful example of a pieced design, made circa 1860. A great deal of skill and experience are required to piece curved seams so precisely; this quilt maker had been around a block ... or two.
The cut-out corners accommodated the two posters at the bottom of the bed.
There are three appliqued swag borders, further suggesting the maker's intention for the orientation of her quilt.
Quilting is by hand, and very well executed. S/he chose straight line quilting, both horizontal and vertical, for the white ground ~ and more decorative designs within each "Crown". The three borders are more densely stitched in clamshell designs, along with some teardrops.
Excellent Condition with no wear, and an occasional light spot, this beauty is in crisp and sturdy condition. Recently washed.
