Hawaiian Flag Quilt

Unidentified Quilt Maker
Circa 1915
76 x 76 inches
Probably Hawaii

Historically, Hawaiian women made two distinct styles of quilt.  Large, appliquéd floral designs (in solid colors) are the best known, but the more rare Hawaiian Flag Quilt appears as well.

Flag quilts became popular after 1893 when Americans replaced the monarchy, with Queen Lili'uokakalani was forced to abdicate the throne. The words here, "Kuu Hae Aloha," executed in reverse applique, translate to "My Beloved Flag."

Quilt makers incorporated the Hawaiian Flag (first appearing around 1816) and the Hawaiian Coat of Arms on their quilts to demonstrate their loyalty to the monarchy and to Hawaii as a nation.

The hand quilting in the center section was executed in a style associated closely with all classic Hawaiian quilts.  "Echo" or "wave" quilting outlines the images. Straight line quilting defines the red white and blue stripes the frame the center.

This example, dating to just after the turn-of-the-20th century, is in Excellent Condition. It has fully intact, and clean, having been recently professionally washed.  Measuring 76 inches square, this one is a great size for hanging.
