Flower Basket Medallion Quilt
Unidentified Quilt Maker; Initialed on back
Circa 1880
74 x 88 inches
Origin Unknown; Found in New Hampshire
I love the scale of this piece, and how the maker positioned the tiny baskets to form a Central Medallion, with all of the handles facing towards the center. And how s/he appliquéd U-shaped "handles" all around the edges to form a playful border.
The woven tape (separately applied) binding, as well as the style (cross stitch) of the embroidered initials on the back (J*H*H) suggest that this may have been made by someone older who learned earlier techniques and employed them here.
The maker used a variety of muslins, and so the Baskets sit on varying white grounds. In Excellent Condition. Thin and lightweight. Hand quilted.
Am I right that there are approximately 218 tiny Baskets here? And that each little block has 22 pieces (including 3 in the appliquéd handle half). That brings the total to about 4,800 pieces.
