We don't know how the quilt maker "saw" her quilt, so we get to place/orient it the way it looks best to us. The first photos are two of the options. And... whether the quilt ends on a wall or bed ... the physical setting might dictate or suggest an orientation.
But, any way you look at it, this is a stunning composition. The maker chose primarily wools, and (wisely) chose to tie the quilt rather than quilt it. She also chose to tie it many. many more times than is practically needed -- making the many white ties an important feature of the overall design.
The maker chose (what I feel confident are) printed cotton feed sacks for her simpler, but also beautiful, back. See photos of her four cotton panels. Could be shown either way.
