Pennsylvania Privy Bag
Unknown Quilt Maker
Circa 1900
20 x 22 inches
Origin Unknown
It's unusual to find examples of Lancaster County, PA "privy bags," and I'm happy to be able to offer this one. What is a Privy Bag?
From the museum catalog in the last photo: "Privy bags were designed to hold the scrap paper earmarked for privy use. Often highly decorative, privy bags came into being in rural Lancaster Co., Pa., in the early decades of the 1800's and continued to be used during the era of the outhouse."
This one is in Excellent Condition, made with some beautiful printed cottons, including color sometimes called "Lancaster Blue."
