Broken Dishes Quilt

Unknown Quilt Maker
Circa 1890
86 x 86 inches
Origin Unknown; Probably Pennsylvania

One of you Smarties will have no trouble figuring out the number of pieces in this 19th century "Broken Dishes" quilt, composed of lotsa, lotsa half square triangles. Looking at it from a distance, I feel like I'm kinda transported to outer space -- like I'm in a space ship looking out at an astral shower.

I see no damage on this marvelous piece; the great variety of prints and shades of brown in the cotton prints are intact, and graciously allow those flashes of yellow to show themselves off.  Two borders of double pink and green prints surround and contain the center.  The maker used a lively printed cotton on the back. The Pennsylvania Germans loved to decorate every surface of their quilts.

There is little or perhaps no batting, and nice, even hand stitches make a proper quilt out of it, as quilting holds the layers together. The quilt  is finished with a knife edge, something you don't see every day in PA quilts. Thin and very light weight.
