Coxcomb Quilt
Unknown Quilt Maker
Circa 1920
83 x 83 inches
Origin Unknown
Some of the finest hand quilting you will see in a 20th century quilt is only one of many wonderful features of this stunning quilt.
Graphically strong and somewhat unusual, the dense center section is surrounded by grand borders.
When I first saw this beauty, I thought it dated to mid-19th century. In fact, a professional appraiser dated it to circa 1850. I can understand why.
Only a very skilled and experienced needleworker could pull off the dense, elaborate, and finely executed hand quilting. It weighs in at 11 -12 stitches perch, counting on side only. The appliquéd (and reverse appliquéd) Pots of flowers (and leaves) sport the "throw-back" technique of white thread button-holing -- rarely seen in the 20th century.
The quilt is both in Excellent Condition, Near-Mint (light pencil lines remain), and at 81 inches square, a generous size.
