When we see a prominent inscription on a quilt, as in this wonderful piece, we often presume that the inscription represents the maker of the quilt."  But, lacking any other documentation, we really can not be sure. 

Perhaps this was made as a celebratory piece made for "E. G. I. Scott, 59 years and seven months" ...  In 1892, living to near 60 years was not a promise.

Whoever made this quilt was skilled, playful, and wildly imaginative; the embroidered images are original as far as I can tell. Please look at each of the squares, which are posted here separately.  

The quilt is made "on foundation, and so it is in two layers. It has neither a formal back, or any batting. It displays beautifully, but there are some condition issues, which are obvious only upon close examination.

An original and charming piece of American Folk Art.
