Log Cabin

Unidentified Quilt Maker
Circa 1890
46 x 53 inches
Found in Connecticut

The late 19th century quilt maker had a very sophisticated sense of color, shading, and scale. S/he used narrow strips to make up the overall design: Log Cabin, Courthouse Steps. The center - small blocks alternating black and solid jewel tones -  is surrounded by an elegant silk border.

All silks, the quilt is in excellent condition, with only two of the more than 3,000 small strips showing small signs of weakening.  The back, a gorgeous red dress-weight wool, is fully intact.

Measuring approximately four feet square, this little jewel is a perfect size for hanging.
