I was very surprised to find the date of "1928" in the quilting of this floral Four Block Applique, found in Virginia. Once I saw that date, the shade of green made more sense. (The green looked "SO" 1920s and 30s, but the rest of the quilt looked 19th century to me. P.S.It can take some time to learn to distinguish and date shades of a color.)
So, when I first saw this quilt, I thought it dated well back into the 19th century. What had me confused?
Well, the large Four Block format with applique is a style we see frequently in the 19th century, but not very often in the 20th. And ... the very narrow, separately applied binding is pretty Old School, too.
But, most of all just check out the quality and density of the elaborate hand quilting here! It is truly off the charts, and executed with a skill rarely seen in quilts made after about 1880. The quilting is truly extraordinary!
Recently hand washed and in Excellent Condition, except for a small areas of dark spots that wouldn't budge. (See photos.) Light pencil lines remain -- these will continue to lift in subsequent washings. Quilt is thin, lightweight, sturdy, and completely intact.
