May Tulips Quilt

Unknown Quilt Maker (Marie Webster Design)
Circa 1930
74 x 84 inches
Origin Unknown

Worked in sateens, sometimes called "polished cottons," this example of "May Tulips" was made by an experienced and very skilled needleworker.  Sadly, the name of the maker has been lost along the quilt's journey from about 1930 until today.

The design comes from the studio of renowned quilt designer, Marie Webster.  Although I have seen many other quilts in the same design, I've not seen any with the quantity and quality of the super-impressive hand quilting here.

The maker executed superb hand stitching which weighs in at about 12 gorgeous, even stitches per inch, counting one side only.  The quilter chose to extraordinarily dense designs, including a tight crosshatch and elegant feathers.  Hand quilting doesn't get much better than this.

Condition of the quilt is perfect, except for some minor fading in the lower right quadrant of the quilt. Visible in the photos.  Because the original colors were soft to begin with, in real life the fade is quite subtle.  The softly scalloped edge makes a lovely finish to this elegant quilt.
