Amish Crazy Quilt
Unidentified Amish Quilt Maker
70 x 84 inches
Holmes County, Ohio
Ex-Esprit Quilt Collection, San Francisco
Once featured in the renowned Esprit Quilt Collection, this stunning, all-cotton quilt is among only a few examples of Amish Crazy Quilts. Likely made in the Amish community of Holmes County, Ohio.
The quilt is in Excellent Condition, and is hand quilted. As is common in Amish quilts, the hand quilting is well executed, in small, even stitches.
The back of the quilt has been prepared for hanging in the "Esprit" way. Strips of Velcro are first sewn to cotton twill tape, and then hand sewn to all four sides of the back. (Can be easily removed.)
I found myself unable to wax poetic about the quilt, so I asked my friend, Mr. Joe Cunningham, to opine:. Here you go:
"Like light shining through shards of glass in this abstract composition, the pale yellow and off-white pieces make their own statement in the central area of the powerful design.
Each of the 20 blocks is an individual composition, but they all seem to speak the same language of diagonals and rectangles, until you notice the concentric triangles in one of the center blocks. It all adds up to a harmony without repetition. The rather standard issue borders are like a chest holding the treasure within."
