Crazy Quilt
Unidentified Quilt Maker
Dated in two places: "1897"
66 x 74 inches
Found in Tennessee
One of the best wool Crazy Quilts I have seen! Dated (1897) and in remarkably good condition ..., Take some time to check out the superb embroidered details here.
The quilt maker added two powerful phrases: "HONOR THY FATHER AND MOTHER," the Fifth of the Ten Commandments. And a second, in script, which reads: "Make Peace at Home."
Every seam here is covered in a variety of colorful embroidered designs -- and those are only the beginning of a journey in embroidery. S/he included embroidered floral images all over the quilt, but it is the animals and people that take the cake.
A Menagerie: a Camel, a Monkey, two Owls, two Cows, two Roosters, and the amazing image of two Riders with their Trotters!
The maker chose a gorgeous cotton print of the era for the back, a perfect finish for a marvelous turn-of-the-20th-century Folk Art textile.
