Bible Stories Quilt
Unidentified Quilt Maker
Circa 1950
52 x 78 inches
Origin Unknown; Found in ColoradoÂ
When in doubt, turn to knowledgable friends. I'd only seen one example of this fantastic Bible Quilt, so I thought I might have something quite rare.  I asked Merikay Waldvogel, who knows almost every single thing about 20th century patterns and kits.  Merikay wrote, briefly:
"Pattern was published in LHJ  <Ladies' Home Journal>  Aug 1938. I've seen only six finished quilts made from The Bible Quilt, No. 1503, issued by the Make-it-yourself Department — Ladies’ Home Journal.  Joyce Gross featured the pattern in Quilter's Journal No. 24. Most were made in 1940s and 50s."
The hand applique and hand embroidery are finely executed. Apparently unused, this rare quilt is in Excellent Condition. Â It's thin and lightweight, lightly hand quilted, and separately bound with cotton gingham.
