Each of the 120 small blocks is expertly appliqued with the most commonly recognized symbol of the Masons: the letter "G" inside a Square and Compass.
The Masons (or Freemasons) are a fraternal organization which began as a guild of stone masons in the 13th century, and remains active.
By using only two fabrics, both of them indigo and white, and alternating lights and darks, the quilt maker created a graphic work of great appeal and sophistication.
