"Good Luck" Red Work Quilt
Unidentified Quilt Maker
Inscribed: "1890"
72 x 72 inches
Origin Unknown; Found in Massachusetts
Inscribed with the date "1890" in one corner, this quilt is a classic example of the red on white outline-embroidered style so popular with American women between about 1880 and 1920.
Unusual, though, is the number of blocks -- 100! -- and the small scale of each. And a variety... "Good Luck" in a horseshoe, the initials "HG," a classic train, playful cats and kids, and more.
Hand embroidered, hand quilted and in very good condition. The interior is strong and sturdy; the very edge -- the binding -- is a bit rough. Recently washed.
