Unidentified Quilt Maker
Circa 1940
49 x 63 inches
Origin Unknown

This crib quilt is rare.  (Not really $1,000,000 -- Please inquire for price.)

When in doubt, turn to knowledgable friends. I'd never seen an example of this fantastic Bible Quilt, so I thought I might have something very rare.  I asked Merikay Waldvogel, who knows almost every single thing about 20th century patterns and kits.  Merikay wrote, briefly:

"Pattern was published in LHJ  <Ladies' Home Journal>  Aug 1938. I've seen only 6 finished quilts made from The Bible Quilt, No. 1503, issued by the Make-it-yourself Department — Ladies’ Home Journal.  Joyce Gross featured the pattern in Quilter's Journal No. 24. Most were made in 1940s and 50s."

It makes sense that there were apparently so few made;  just look how many complicated shapes one would have to cut, and hand applique. And then embroider!  It would take an extraordinarily skilled needlewoman to even take on so difficult a project, and then to execute it so expertly!

Apparently unused, the quilt is in Excellent Condition, with the only exception a lightened area (about the size of a lemon) between Joseph and His Brothers -- and Moses with "Pharaoh's Daughter." (Isn't it interesting that she is never named in the Bible, and only referred to as Pharaoh's daughter?) (And how of us many can recall Moses' Hebrew mother's name?  I had to look it up!) It is also very well hand quilted. All cottons.
